Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) supremo, Akhil Gogoi recently came to the spotlight after he alleged that top cops of the city are hand-in-gloves with international supari (areca nut) mafia and "causing a loss to the state exchequer". The KMSS has also filed an FIR against many officials of the Assam Police at the Dispur Police Station. However, some of the accused have rubbished Gogoi's allegations as 'baseless'.

Reacting to the allegations of the peasant body, Parthasarathi Mahanta, Kamrup district SP, who has been named by Akhil Gogoi in connection with the case, said the KMSS should have verified the reports instead of . The Assam 'top cop' further clarified to the media that he had actually gone to the hotel with his wife to attend the star-studded 'Northeast Diva' beauty pageant, while Akhil Gogoi's KMSS had alleged that he was there to attend a 'meeting' with supari mafia. Mahanta further chided some sections of the media for carrying news based on rumours and cautioned them to verify news before publishing/carrying it.

Gogoi, who is no stranger to stirring up controversy, alleged that a meeting was held between some top police officials and members of the mafia in hotel Vivanta by Tag in Guwahati city of Assam. Furthermore, Gogoi's KMSS alleged that some 'top cops' of the city, including jKamrup (Rural) SP Partha Sarathi Mahanta, and Karimganj SP Manabendra Roy are also involved in the business.

The KMSS has, in the meantime, alleged that on 5/08/2019, a meeting of traders who are involved in illegal dry betelnut (supari) trade took place at Hotel Taj Vivanta at Khanapara in Guwahati. In the said meeting representatives of Abdul Hanan Ali alias Bablu, Dipankar Deb, and Anjan Paul were present. "Be it stated that all thezse persons are illegal dry betelnut (supari) traders. In receiving the information about the meeting we reached there and saw Manabendra Deb Roy, Superintendent of Police, Karimganj district, at whose instance the meetimg toopk plave., Along with them, we also found a person wearing checked shirt. We took a picture of that person and later on, came to learn that he is Kfil Ahmed from Barak, a dry betelnut s(supari) mafia. Later on, two persons -- one male and another female -- got down from a Toyota Innova vehicle bearing registration number AS-25 J-0001. Both of them were received by associates of Kafil Ahmed and Bablu. Subsequently, we came to know that they are none other than Partha Sarathi Mahantha (SP, Kamrup Rural) and his wife Indrani Baruah (SSP, CID)", their statement read.
