Peasant leader Akhil Gogoi on Wednesday slammed North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Ltd (NEEPCO) for allegedly storing three times more water than the capacity of its reservoir to produce electricity at the Doyang river project in Nagaland’s Wokha district.
According to the allegation, the water level of Doyang increased drastically following rains and that NEEPCO authorities couldn’t control the stored water anymore and had to release it, leading to floods downstream.
Golaghat district was affected the most after the excess water was allegedly released without prior notice.
Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, Krishi Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader Gogoi further warned NEEPCO authorities that if they fail to pay compensation to the affected people, then his organisation would be forced to intensify stir.
He held NEEPCO solely responsible for the death of five persons in the downstream. He also demanded that Assam floods be declared as a national calamity.
