GUWAHATI: The ruling BJP today said it will get an even bigger mandate in Assam this time because of the opposition alliances.

“The writing is on the wall because the opposition parties are not at all confident. When do parties form alliance? It’s when they are not confident to go it along. And wherever the Congress forms an alliance, we win there. The bigger the opposition alliance, the bigger we get the mandate. So, I am confident that we will win with a bigger mandate in Assam this time,” DoNER minister Jitendra Singh here today about the Congress alliance.

“The same applies to any other alliance. I don’t think there will be any impact of opposition alliances on our party. The people who will vote for BJP know why they vote for BJP,” he added when asked about the Assam Jatiya Parishad-Raijor Dal alliance.

Asked about a chief ministerial candidate on the perspective that finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is another candidate a section with the BJP’s state unit prefers over incumbent Sarbananda Sonowal, Singh said: “We are yet to think over it. “The BJP and the Congress differ here. We are not a party where a family takes all the call. We don’t decide party candidates in the kitchen or over the dining table. The BJP has a mechanism to decide those aspects.”

The Congress has also decided to go to the polls in April without naming any chief minister face.

Both the BJP and the Congress have been claiming that they would win over 100 seats in the 126-member assembly.
