GUWAHATI: Union Home Minister Amit Shah today ceremonially laid the foundation stone of Tamulpur Medical College and Cancer Hospital through video conferencing from Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in the presence of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and BTC Chief Promod Boro.
Making an address at the GMCH, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that this is a continuation of the vision to erect a medical college in each district of the state.
Sarma added that construction on medical colleges is underway in North Lakhimpur, Dhubri, Nagaon, Nalbari, Tinsukia, Kokrajhar, Biswanath, and Charaideo.
"In our new budget, we have also announced the decision to allocate funds for Dhemaji, Morigaon, Tamulpur, Bongaigaon, and Golaghat," announced Sarma, adding that plans are afoot to construct more medical colleges in Goalpara, Morigaon, and Guwahati.
"To have 23 medical colleges in Assam is a great deal and could not have even been dreamt of 10 years ago," Sarma said, before attributing it to Shah and PM Modi.
Acknowledging the tragedy of COVID-19 which has so far claimed 5,114 lives so far, Sarma said that state government machinery has been trying its best to curb the spread of the disease.
Sarma said that the state government has undertaken initiative to give scholarship of Rs. 3,500 to kids orphaned by COVID, women who lost their husbands to the virus, and
Shah also inaugurated the Radio Therapy Block of State Cancer Institute, GMCH, and also dedicated a newly installed state-of-the-art Linear Accelerator machine at the center to the people earlier today, informed chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
It needs mention here that Amit Shah has arrived on a two-day visit to the Northeast Indian states of Meghalaya and Assam. This is the Home Minister's first visit to the region since the April-May election in Assam, in which the BJP swept to victory.
