Amritprava Mahanta gets bail in Zubeen Garg death case, first accused to secure relief
The Gauhati High Court has granted bail to Amritprava Mahanta in the Zubeen Garg death case. She is the first accused to secure relief in the main case as the Singapore death probe continues.

- Gauhati High Court granted Mahanta bail on a Rs 50,000 bond
- She was arrested on October 2 after hours of SIT questioning
- Garg died while swimming off Singapore during the North East India Festival
The Gauhati High Court has granted bail to Amritprava Mahanta, a co-singer of late Assam icon Zubeen Garg, in the case relating to his death in Singapore in September 2025. She is the first accused in the case to secure bail, according to available details.
Mahanta was granted bail on a bond of Rs 50,000. She was arrested by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Assam Police on October 2, 2025, following hours of questioning, and has been lodged in Haflong Jail since then.
Garg, 52, died on September 19, 2025, while swimming in the sea off Singapore during a visit to attend the North East India Festival. His death triggered widespread protests across Assam, with people demanding a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Assam government subsequently constituted an SIT to investigate the case. The probe led to the arrest of several people who had accompanied Garg to Singapore, including festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, the singer's manager Siddhartha Sharma, and band members Shekharjyoti Goswami and Amritprava Mahanta.
The SIT later filed a chargesheet accusing Amritprava Mahanta, Shyamkanu Mahanta, Sharma and Goswami of murder. Garg's cousin, Sandipan Garg, was charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, while his two personal security officers, Nandeswar Bora and Paresh Baishya, were charged with criminal conspiracy and criminal breach of trust.
The case centres on the circumstances of Garg's death during the Singapore trip, with investigators alleging a conspiracy rather than an accidental drowning. The allegations against the accused are subject to judicial proceedings.
Earlier, two of Garg's personal security officers had secured bail in a separate case linked to alleged financial transactions.
