'Arms politics' will no longer be tolerated in BTR, warns DGP Mahanta

KOKRAJHAR: Assam's Director General of Police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta has promised strict action against the purported 'arms politics' by anti-social elements in the Bodo Territorial Region (BTR) comprising the four districts of Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa, and Udalguri.

 

"The situation has turned for the better; we are marching towards peace and tranquility in the BTR region. Therefore, the Assam police will take strict action against elements that threaten to challenge the ushering in of peace in the region," Mahanta said, adding, "Arms politics will no longer be tolerated. If gun totters try to extort rice, food items, and money from the public, they should be countered with strict and swift action. After a long struggle, peace has finally prevailed in the once-strife-torn region. If someone tries to disturb the peace during this pivotal moment, they will not be taken lightly."

He said that under no situation would "disturbance" be allowed in the region be allowed and state government and police administration is fully ready to take strict action at any given moment.

 

"Arms politics would be spared at any costs in BTR areas as the area is now seeing a healthy environment of peace and unity through the BTR accord", Mahanta said.

 

Mahanta has been camping in Kokrajhar, the heart of BTR administration since Tuesday evening in his two-day visit scheduled in Kokrajhar to take stock of law and order situation ahead of the Assam assembly elections.

 

The DGP yesterday held meetings with senior police officials including the IGP of BTR at the Kokrajhar SP office.
