Guwahati (Assam), September 16, 2018:

Saidul Alam, who was arrested by the police for his alleged links with terrorist outfit Hizbul Mujahideen, was a meritorious student, the police said.

Addressing a press conference on Sunday, Hojai Superintendent of Police Ankur Jain said Alam was given the responsibility to spread the wings of Hizbul Mujahideen in Assam.

“He (Alam) was a meritorious student who passed Class X and XII with flying colours. However, he got in touch with terror modules in 2015 when he visited the Nizamuddin Markaz Masjid in New Delhi,” Jain said.

Three years later in 2018, Alam got associated with Hizbul Mujahideen operative Qamar-uz-Zaman. Alam besides Shahnewaz and Omar Farooque were arrested by the police from different parts of Assam and Meghalaya following the recent arrest of Zaman by Uttar Pradesh Police from Kanpur.

During interrogation of the accused, the police learnt that Zaman, Alam and Shahnewaz were in close contact with one another.

“He (Alam) has revealed about going to Srinagar in April this year and meeting some Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists,” the SP said. He said Alam was entrusted by Zaman to identify places in Assam so Hizbul Mujahideen could spread its tentacles. Lumding was one area they had their eyes on, Jain said.
