GUWAHATI: The people of Assam are today observing "Asom Divas" in remembrance of Swargadeo Chaolung Sukapha, considered to be the architect of greater Assam.
Since 1996, December 2 has been celebrated as Asom Divas to commemorate the advent of the first king of the Ahom kingdom in Assam after his journey over the Patkai Hills. Sukaphaa was a Shan prince of Mong Mao who came to Assam after crossing the Patkai mountains.

Chaolung Sukaphaa was the first Ahom king in medieval Assam and the founder of the Ahom dynasty. The Ahom dynasty (1228–1826) ruled the Ahom kingdom in present-day Assam, India for nearly 598 years.
According to Ahom tradition, Sukaphaa was a descendant of the god Khunlung, who had come down from the heavens and had ruled Mong-Ri-Mong-Ram.
Asom Divas is a significant celebration in the socio-political life of the State.
On this day, every Assamese takes a pledge to take the ideals of unity and brotherhood of great Ahom King Chaolung Siu-Ka-Pha forward to build a stronger and composite Assam.
On this occasion, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal paid tribute to Chaolung Siu-Ka-Pha and remembered the great soul for his significant works to establish peace and stability in the state.

I pay my respects to Swargadeo Sukaphaa for giving soul to the Assamese way of life.
