Asom Sangrami Manch Condemns Sonowal Government for Power Crisis in Assam

Guwahati, August 8, 2019:

The 'Asom Sangrami Manch' on Thursday came down heavily on the Sarbananda Sonowal led government regarding power crisis in the state in the past days.

The Asom Sangrami Manch alleged that the Sonowal government’s slogan of '24 hours power supply' is not reflective of the actual condition the state, and rather, it should be '24 hours power cut'.

“A department comprises of 3 companies, one minister, one chairman, three managing directors, and 12 chief engineers. In the past 18 years, the department has done nothing but politics and corruption,” the Manch alleged.

The Manch added, “The department also lacks a minister after Tapan Gogoi got elected as the Lok Sabha MP in the last election. The newly appointed chairman is also nowhere to be seen, neither in the department nor in the state. Despite increasing the electricity costing time to time, the customers are not being provided with facilities. The issues have been also taken to the Vidhan Sabha.”

“No developmental plans have been made for the department. Earlier in 2018, 41 lakh customers were registered, in 2019, the customers were increased to 57 lakh and under Sauvagya Yojana 16,000 customers were named for the power supply, but there is no electricity,” it added.

The Manch further mentioned, “As per the Census, for the year 2019-20, 2222 MWatt electricity will be required but the production by the state itself is very low. Generally, 60 percent of electricity production is required in contrast to that less than 15 percent is being produced in the state. Rest is needed to be purchased from the Central government.

In the different sphere of time, different projects were taken up by the government but no development took place in the past 11 years.”
