Hailakandi, February 10, 2020:

A clash in connection with a land dispute in Mohonpur in Hailakandi district of Assam on Sunday resulted in the death of a youth. Additionally, one person was severely wounded in the incident.

Sources said two groups of people had heated altercation over a plot of land with one group suddenly attacking the other with sharp weapons, resulting in the instantaneous death of a youth who has been identified as Abhijit Sharma Mazumder, a resident of Bhatirkupa Part III village. Another person identified as Pratap Ray also sustained grievous injuries. He has been shifted to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for treatment.
Police rushed to the spot soon after the incident and dispersed the mob and security has subsequently been beefed up in the area.
Tension prevailed in the Assam town with a group of persons later laying seize to the Sadar Police Station. Police tried to pacify them and had to resort to a mild lathicharge to disperse the mob.
Apprehending further breach of peace and tranquility, the Hailakandi district administration clamped Section 144 CrPC in the entire district yesterday evening.
Superintendent of Police, Pabindra Kumar Nath said the situation is by and large peaceful with no reports of any untoward incident since last evening. "Though the situation is peaceful so far, it is under sharp watch," added Nath. DIG (Southern Range), Dilip Kumar Dey is also closely monitoring the situation.
Three persons have been arrested in connection with the incident and police is on the look out for more persons involved in the incident.
