TINSUKIA: A massive protest has been staged in Assam's Makum demanding justice for a 12-year-old rape victim. The protest was held on the 37 no. National Highway and the agitators also sent a memorandum to the Chief Minister of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal, demanding his intervention and justice in the matter.

The agitation, led from the forefront by the ATTSA, an influential body of tea tribes, was launched to demand the death penalty for the accused. One of the accused -- Gautam Chatterjee has been nabbed. The second accused, Pabitra Das, is still on the run.

On November 30, Pabitra Das and Gautam Chatterjee had reportedly raped a 12-year-old minor girl in their shop located in Makum's Betjan Road and have been on the run ever since. Pabitra Das is yet to be arrested.

"The culprits must be hanged. If not, our organization is prepared to stage protests on a state-wide basis. Although we had filed an FIR on December 1, one of the accused is still absconding. We strongly condemn the lackadaisical attitude of the authorities," said one of the protesters.
According to sources, investigations are currently underway into the matter. Further details are awaited.
