In another setback to insurgent forces in the Northeast, three United Liberation Front of Assam (Independent) cadres were nabbed by the Security forces as part of 'Operation Tarani'. The cadres have been identified as self-styled SS Cpl Bubul Moran alias Tiger Asom, self-styled SS L/Cpl Binondo Dahotia alias Swadesh Asom and self-styled SS Pvt Chandrakant Borhohain alias Tipong Asom were apprehended along with sophisticated arms and ammunition at Tarani Reserve Forest on 14 May, 2019 at around 6:15 pm.
This operation is part of the ongoing crackdown by security forces on the insurgent organisations active in the Upper Assam region.
Based on reliable intelligence reports received over the past fortnight regarding the cadres having crossed over the Indo-Myanmar border for carrying out specific activities in Upper Assam, a joint operation was launched by Indian Army and Police.
Sustained and intense pressure was exerted on them which prevented these cadres from getting in touch with their over ground workers and execute their task. Reliable sources in the security forces have indicated that inspite of those cadres being hardened criminals, a lenient view had been taken and they were pressurized by the Security Forces to give themselves up.
Their families and friends were contacted to influence them to give up and save their lives. The efforts of security forces resulted in these cadres realising the futility of their situation and they were apprehended by the Army and Police without further resistance.
Three automatic AK/HK rifles have been recovered from the ULFA (I) cadres.
It may be added that ever since the Myanmar Army launched an offensive at the behest of the Indian Government, as many as twenty cadres belonging to the ULFA (I) and NDFB (S), which included the Foreign Secretary of the NDFB (S), have laid down their arms.
But crossing the border has proved a perilous task as the deserter have to pass through NSCN (K)-supporting Naga villages where some militants have been apprehended. Murmurs suggest that some were ‘executed’ due to their attempts to cross the border.
