In Assam district Dibrugarh area's Moran, as many as 35 couples tied the knot late at night amid pomp and show. The purohit (priest) chanted shlokas and the traditional aarti was performed.
Sanjay Tati, a local social worker from Khatkhati Khelmati, organized the marriage ceremonies for the tea community people from the below-poverty line who were unable to perform the rituals in public owing to shortage of funds. Astoundingly, some of the people who tied the knot were even grandpas and grandmas.

Some of the couples were over 60 years old and played bride and groom in front of their children and grandkids. According to reports, Sanjay Tati had arranged the entire cost of the wedding, including the cost of wedding garbs, vermilion, et al, and the locals who took part in the ceremony thanked the youth for his initiative.
"I thought of doing something for society. In our society, there are many people who are not able to tie the know. I talked to my brothers about it. On my own dime, after arranging clothes for them, we have arranged the wedding. I have been aided in this noble endeavour by my wife", said Sanjay Tati, who wore a festive look in the mehfil surrounded by people who were grateful to him for making the necessary arrangements to tie the community in the wedlock.
A sixty year old man who tied the knot yesterday, said that he has two children, and several grandkids, but had not been able to afford a proper wedding ceremony. "What can you do? There is no work. No money, that is why we have not been able to marry", his wife pipped in.
Thanking the social worker, all 35 couple as well as the All Assam Tea Student Association members said that this was a great opportunity for the deprived community to unite in the bond of March.
"Today, 35 couples have been able to fulfill their dream that they have held for long. From many tea gardens people have been able to tie the knot -- from Moran tea garden, Sepon tea estate. We are elated. All of us tea tribe community members thank Mr Tati for organizing a function like this", a member of the Assam tea tribes' association told the media.
