Assam: 57 Lakh Affected by Floods; Death Tally Rises to 28

Guwahati, July 17, 2019:

Flood continues to wreak havok in the Northeastern states, and especially in Assam. As per the latest reports disclosed by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), 4,626 villages in 114 revenue circles have been affected due to the floods caused by incessant rains in the region.

The districts of Assam which have been affected due to floods are: Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Sonitpur, Darrang, Udalguri, Baksa, Barpeta, Nalbari, Chirang, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Dhubri, South Salmara, Goalpara, Kamrup, Kamrup (M), Morigaon, Nagaon, Hojai, Golaghat, Majuli, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Cachar, Karbi Anglong, and Karimganj.

As per the latest official figures, approximately 57,51,938 people have been affected due to the floods.

427 relief camps have been set up across the state to provide relief to those affected by the floods. As of now, relief camps are operational in the districts of Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Sonitpur, Darrang, Baksa, Nalbari, Barpeta, Chirang, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Dhubri, South Salmara, Goalpara, Kamrup, Morigaon, Nagaon, Karbi Anglong, Golaghat, Majuli, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Cachar and Karimganj districts.

The total number of deaths caused by floods now stands at 28. Two persons have also lost their lives due to landslides.

Many rivers are above the 'danger level' in various parts of the State. These are: Brahmaputra at Neamatighat (Jorhat), Tezpur (Sonitpur), Guwahati (Kamrup), Goalpara, Dhubri; Dhansiri (S) at Numaligarh (Golaghat); Jia Bharali at N.T.Rd.Xing (Sonitpur); Kopili at Kampur and Dharamtul (Nagaon), Puthimari at N.H.Rd.Xing (Kamrup); Beki at Rd. Bridge (Barpeta); Katakhal at Matizuri (Hailakandi); and the Kushiyara at Karimganj.

The NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) and SDRF (State Disaster Response Force) teams have been pressed into service in the flood affected areas for search and rescue operations.
