Assam: ABSU Urges Govt to Release Ranjan Daimary for 'Peace Process'Assam

Guwahati, February 24, 2020:

Claiming that Ranjan Daimary's absence could negatively impact the ongoing "peace process" between the Centre, Assam Government and Bodo groups, Lorence Islary, the General Secretary of the All Bodo Students' Union (ABSU) has opined that the leader should be set free for the peace process.

Talking to Inside Northeast earlier today, Islary said that the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) Chief's imprisonment could affect the rehabilitation of the cadres who have recently come overground, lured by the prospect of peace. "Look, the Government is in the process of rehabilitating hundreds of cadres. If the leader himself is jailed, they will be demoralized."

The ABSU GS further opined that the involvement of Daimary will ensure smoother implementation of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) pact, as the NDFB supreme was one of the key signatories. "Daimary is one of the key signatories, so by all means, he should play an active role in the implementation of the clauses", Islary said, adding that although the peace process will not be derailed by the absence of Daimary, it would surely be inconvenienced by it.

Islary, however, believes that the Court cases against Daimary, who is the prime accused in the Assam serial blasts of 2008 that left 81 dead, can continue. "The Court cases can continue. However, Daimary can be given bail until the situation with the peace pact is sorted, as it is still in its infacy stages", Islary added.
