Renowned Assamese actor Ravi Sarma on Monday resigned from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as a mark of protest against the Citizenship (Amendment), Bill which has been tabled at the Lok Sabha on Monday by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Addressing a press conference, Ravi Sarma said, “At a time where there is a crisis between the King and his subjects, it is better to be with the subjects, as they are the ones who decide the term of the rulers...”
"Earlier, some good policies of the BJP attracted me, but now, the way it is adamant over enacting the Citizenship Bill, it has let to a situation of unrest in the state", the actor added.
Assuring to oppose the Bill and stand with the people in the battle of evicting the illegal migrants from the state, Sarma added, “I hereby announce my resignation from the party, and I will do all the necessary documentation work to cement my resignation after this.”
The actor also urged the people of the nation to stand with the people of Assam and to save the culture and identity of the State.
