Demow: Protests have begun again in Upper Assam's Demow: this time against Tezpur MP Pallab Lochan Das. Effigies of the Tezpur Member of Parliament were burnt by members of the Adivasi community for Das's alleged opposition to the granting of Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to the 36 Adivasi sub-communities of the state.
Around 50 activists of the Adivasi body All Adibasi Student Association of Assam (AASAA) came together and raised slogans against the ruling dispensation. Pallab Lochan Das was the special object of their ire and they issued warnings against the MP.
"We want to remind Pallab Lochan Das and his BJP brethren not to interfere in the granting of ST status to the adivasi community," one of the demonstrators told media.

Earlier, the AASAA had said that it was quite disheartening to note that a section of State BJP leaders were hands in gloves with Assam Tea Tribe Students' Association (ATTSA) and had posed hindrance to the process of granting ST status to the Adivasi people.
It needs mention here that the organizations seeks ST status for 36 Adivasi sub-communities like Munda, Oraon, Kharia, Santhal, Ho and other eligible sub-communities as recognized by government bodies.
