Around 200 AAASA workers took to the streets in demand of recognition by the government as Scheduled Tribes. Locals also came out in support of the demand.

They took out a protest rally from Assam’s Udalguri to Tamulpur shouting slogans like – “No ST, No Rest”, “BJP Sarkaar Go Back”, “ST is our Birthright”, etc.

The AAASA has been demanding ST status since the past 23 years. “It has been 23 years now, but the government is yet to take the necessary steps to give us the ST status. Through this demonstration, we want to let the state and central governments know that the Adivasi people of Assam have their constitutional rights. The ST status is one of them,” said one of the protesters.

The Adivasi Students’ body has urged the leaders to discuss the long pending issue in the ongoing winter session of the Parliament. “We will not take our demand back. We want a solution,” they added.
