Hafiz Rafiqul Islam of the AIUDF has thumped his nearest rival, Congress' Shomsul Haque, by a hefty margin of 35,037 votes in the by-election in the Jania Constituency in Assam.
While Islam won 81,608 votes, Haque secured 46,541 votes. BJP's Towfiqur Rahman secured 15,239 votes. The AIUDF party had been the favorite the minority-dominated Jania Assembly Constituency all along.

It may be mentioned here that Rafiqul Islam is an All India United Democratic Front politician from Assam. He was previously elected in the Assam Legislative Assembly election in 2011 from the Jania constituency. He was born in Barpeta in Assam in 1973.
In the Assam by-polls, the BJP has won in both Ratabari and Rangapara Constituencies. In Sonari also, the BJP candidate, Nabanita Handique is maintaining a strong lead over the competition.

It may be mentioned here that the by-poll in Jania after Congress MLA Abdul Khaleque was elected to the Lok Sabha earlier this year.
