Guwahati, December 22, 2019:

The hunger strike of the recently-incarcerated Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader, Akhil Gogoi’s mother, Priyada Gogoi, has entered its third day on Sunday.

She had launched the hunger strike demanding unconditional release of Akhil Gogoi, who was arrested by the Police from Jorhat district. Priyada Gogoi had sat on the hunger strike despite her ailing health.

Akhil Gogoi’s mother had launched the hunger strike after her son was sent to the custody of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) amid rising protests against the Citizenship Act across Assam.

It may be mentioned here he has been booked under the Unlawful Assembly Prevention Act (UAPA) by the NIA, allegedly for “waging a war against the nation”. His custody amid the protests has been observed as a major setback to the indigenous organisations of Assam as Gogoi has been playing an active role in the statewide protests over the C(A)A. He also urged the general public to stand up against the contentious Bill-turned act.
