Assam Artists, Intellectuals Boycott Filmfare Awards to be Held in Guwahatiassam

Guwahati, January 28, 2020:

Amid nationwide protests against the amendment of the Citizenship Act by the Government, the artiste and intellect communities of Assam have called for a boycott of the Filmfare Awards to be held in Guwahati, on February 15.

Manjit Mahanta, senior journalist and noted intellectual, told the media that the "corporate" Filmfare awards should not be held in Assam due to sensitivity of the period. "At a time when the entire Assamese community is up-in-arms against the CAA, I do not think that the Filmfare award should be held here."

Addressing the press here today, Zerifa Wahid, noted actress, said, "The Filmfare Award that will be held in Assam is the actual traditional ceremony, being held for the last 65 years. Our artists will not have any role here. When the stars will descend...they will have specific performances."

The Assam actress also opined that since the Assamese artistes will not be a part of the event, and they won't be allowed to perform at the function, the artiste community of Assam does not stand to gain much from the event.

Actor Ravi Sarma, who resigned from the BJP party due to differences over the Citizenship Amendment Act, supporting the boycott, said, " I think this is not the right environment for a film event to happen in Assam. We are on the boil...and only recently, we saw five corpses (of the martyrs of the anti-CAA movement in Assam."
