Assam: Assam University professor accused of sexual harassment

An Assam University professor, Dr Sudipto Sarkar, was removed as Head of the Department (Agriculture Engineering) and sent on leave after he was accused of sexually harassing an M.Tech student of his department for the past few months.

The victim, however, was not amused. She demanded the teacher be dismissed from service.

“I want that no other student faces such a situation. There are many junior and senior students who go through such an ordeal but they do not dare reveal anything for the fear of being targeted in exams by such teachers,” she claimed.

The Assam University Students’ Union claimed that sending the teacher on leave was a conspiracy hatched by the varsity authority. The union demanded the teacher be immediately sacked. It threatened that if the authority did not do so by 12 noon of Monday, it would launch a series of protests.

The union said it would inform the offices of the President of India and the Prime Minister to make it a national issue.
