Hailakandi, November 3, 2018:
The Assam bandh called by certain organizations in protest against the killings in Tinsukia district, passed off peacefully in South Assam's Hailakandi district on Saturday.
The district administration took several measures to ensure that offices remain open and no bandh supporters disrupt normal activities.
In the morning hours picketers tried to prevent employees from entering in some government offices, including District Transport Office at the district headquarters of Hailakandi town but police arrived at the spot and dispersed the picketers.
Superintendent of Police, Mohneesh Mishra said no untoward incident happened in any part of the district during the bandh period. Altogether 235 picketers have been arrested under various police stations of the district.
"The overall law and order situation remained peaceful,"' said Mishra, adding no additional forces were deployed as existing forces were sufficient to deal with today's situation.
Deputy Commissioner Adil Khan, who closely monitored the situation, had instructed all the government employees to attend offices failing which he warned of strict disciplinary action. Khan had convened a meeting of the district level peace committee on Friday and sought the cooperation of the members, prominent citizens and political representatives to maintain peace and tranquility in the district and to thwart the attempts of anti-social elements to disturb the prevailing peace in the society.
