Assam Bihu Committees Boycott 6 Celebs over CAA Support

Guwahati, January 11, 2019:

Six prominent celebrities from the Assamese cultural sphere have been 'boycotted' by 26 Bihu committees from Dibrugarh district of Assam, allegedly due to their 'support' for the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act, that has sparked nationwide protests.

The boycotted artistes are: Priyanka Bharali, Krishnamoni Chutia, Nayan Nilim, Akash Deep, Gayatri Mahanta and Pabitra Margherita.

According to sources, the artistes will not be invited to any Bihu function in Dibrugarh. However, singer Priyanka Bharali, who had joined a protest organized by the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) in Guwahati on Friday, said that her name has been added to the list of boycotted artistes by mistake, as she has been opposing the legislation, which came into effect on Friday, though the means of democratic protests.

"There has been a misunderstanding. I have clarified that. I have been participating in protests, will continue to do so. Perhaps I have not been captured by the camera; perhaps this is a conspiracy. Everybody's way of protesting differs", the singing sensation clarified.

Earlier, the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), the Asom Jatiyabadi Yuba Chhatra Parishad (AJYCP), and 30 other indigenous have banned politicians and celebrities who are in support of the controversial of the Citizenship Amendment Act.

Moreover, the organizations have demanded all business establishments, vidyalayasmahavidyalas, Government and non-Government  to use the Assamese language, and have also urged the people to communicate in Assamese in public places. They have always warned that non-compliance with this will result in the black-marking of the institutions where the rule is broken.
