The Assam government has introduced a Bill in the Assembly to bring Madrassas of the state under the prevailing statutory norms and standards and to restrict growth of such institutions. On behalf of Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary introduced The Assam Madrassa Education (Provincialisation of Services of Employees and Re-Organisation of Madrassa Educational Institutions) Bill, 2018.
In his statement of objects and reasons, Sarma said the Bill is brought so that the Madrassa schools conform to the prevailing statutory norms and standards, and it also has "a further objective to restrict any further growth of such venture Madrassa educational institutions in the state".
