Rohini Gogoi, a close aide of Khumtai's BJP MLA Mrinal Saikia has been arrested in relation to the open firing outside the house of Rita Rajkhowa, a local Congress leader and President of the Dhekiyal Gram Panchayat, in Ganakpukhri in Golaghat district of Assam.
Gogoi, who was arrested last night, was pinpointed by locals after the firing took place outside Rajkhowa's residence, right after she had participated in protests against the amendment of the Citizenship Act.
It was believed that the local authorities were reluctant to arrest Gogoi as he is a close aide of Saikia, but after completion of their initial investigations, the Golaghat police zeroed in on the MLA's friend and eventually arrested him last night. Apart from the arrest of the suspect, Gogoi, the local authorities are continuing the crackdown against the miscreants responsible for the indiscriminate firing.
It may be mentioned here that at around 9 pm on January 2, miscreants turned up outside the house of a local Congress leader, Rita Rajkhowa, and let off a volley of bullets outside her residence.
It may be mentioned that an anti-CAA brigade leader called Binoy Bora was also present at Rajkhowa’s house when the attack was carried out. Bora’s vehicle, a Maruti Van, was also fired upon — bullets pierced the vehicle 3 times, and a side windshield was shattered. It is pertinent to mention here both Bora and Rajkhowa had taken active participation in the rally against a ‘CAA’ that was held in Dergaon town of Assam earlier in the afternoon.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi, who represents the Kaliabor Lok Sabha constituency in Assam, has written to the Director General of Police, Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, demanding action against the miscreants.
According a notice issued from his office, Gaurav Gogoi has accordingly requested the top cop to ensure that a high level enquiry takes place in a fair and expedient manner to punish the culprits behind the open firing incident.
Gogoi has also emphasised upon the importance of allowing citizens of India, especially Assam, to protest against the undemocratically passed Citizenship Amendment Act, and requested the authorities to ensure that such a right is not taken away by the above stated incidents.
