Assam Boxer Lovlina Borgohain to be honored with the prestigious Arjuna Award. Borgohain’s name has been added in the list of 29 athletes and sportspersons who have been honored with the award by the Government this year. The names on the list have been suggested by the Sports Ministry's selection committee.

Indian pacer Ishant Sharma, Atanu Das, Deepika Thakur, Deepak Hooda, Divij Sharan, Mirabai Chanu, Sakshi Malik, and three Paralympians are also among the 29 athletes who have been recommended for the Arjuna Award so far.

Lovlina Borgohain won a gold medal at 1st India Open International Boxing Tournament held in New Delhi and a silver medal at the 2nd India Open International Boxing Tournament held in Guwahati. Recently, she also won a bronze medal at the 2019 AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships held in Ulan-Ude, Russia.

Lovlina has become the first woman from Assam to qualify for the Olympics and the second boxer from the state to represent the country after Shiva Thapa.

The other 5 sportspersons from Assam who have received the Arjuna Award include Bhogeswar Baruah, Monalisa Baruah Mehta, Jayanta Talukdar, Shiva Thapa, and Hima Das.

Meanwhile, Indian Cricketer Rohit Sharma has been named among the 5 recipients of the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award this year. Mariyappan T (para-athletics), Manika Batra (table tennis), Vinesh Phogat (Wrestling) and Rani Rampal (Hockey) are the others who have been honored with the award. The formal announcement has been made on Friday (August 21) after the Sports Ministry gives approval on this recommendation

National Sports Awards which include the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award, the Arjuna award, the Dronacharya award, and the Dhyan Chand award, are conferred on athletes every year by the President of India at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on August 29, the National Sports Day.
