BAKSA: A bridge over Kala river along the Indo-Bhutan border has become a threat to the people of the area in Baksa district of Assam as the bridge can cave in any moment.

If the bridge breaks down, the international trade route would also be snapped.

The locals of the area have alleged that the bridge has been facing several challenges because of two sand and chips mining depots on the southern side of the bridge.

Excavation of rock and sand has created a ditch near the south side of the bridge and rain water has washed away all the rock and sand on the northern side.

Because of this, sand and soil around the two pillars of the bridge have been washed away, the pillars of the bridge have become weak.

Besides that, villagers from about 15 villages have also been excavating for farming or daily necessities.

Though, at the request of the locals, the government has already stopped excavations near the two places allotted by the government.

However, the news of the re-emergence of a new sand and chips depot a little away from the bridge has alarmed the people in the area.

The residents of the area have appealed to Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) chief Pramod Boro and the administration to take appropriate action in this regard.
