GUWAHATI: The counting of voting for the by polls in the five Assembly constitiencies have begun in Assam.

As per the initial trend, BJP's Sushanta Borgohain is heading ahead with 2736 votes for Thowra constituency.

The polls witnessed a cumulative voter turnout of 74.04 per cent of which the highest count at 78 per cent was recorded at Bhabanipur assembly seat

Gossaigaon resgistered a voter turnout of 77.37 per cent followed by Tamulpur 67.88 per cent.

77.56 per cent was recorded at Thowra and a 71.70 per cent turnout at Mariani seat.

The polling took place on 30th October in Gossaigaon, Bhabanipur, Tamulpur, Mariani and Thowra assembly segments, with strict adherence to COVID-19 protocols.

Bypolls in Gossaigaon and Tamulpur were required owing to the deaths of the sitting MLAs. On the other hand the incumbents of Bhabanipur, Mariani and Thowra left their seats to join the saffron clan.

MLAs Rupjyoti Kurmi and Sushanta Borgohain resigned from the Congress. While Phanidhar Talukdar left AIUDF and is now fighting on BJP ticket.

The state witnessed several shuffles from Congress to the saffron fold in the recent times.

While speaking on polls, Rupjyoti Kurmi, who joined BJP sometime back, anticipated that after joining the ruling party some of his enemies might have turned into wellwishers for the decision he took.
