Assam on Saturday celebrated the 92nd birth anniversary of legendary singer-composer Dr. Bhupen Hazarika with musical soirees and tributes to the bard.
Cultural programmes were also organised by groups and organisations at several places. The events bore testimony to the love and respect which the people of the state bestowed on the singer-director.
Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Cultural Affairs Minister Naba Doley, Guwahati MP Bijoya Chakraborty and others swarmed to his memorial site in Gauhati University and paid homage to him.
Sonowal said, “Bhupen Hazarika was a worshiper of humanity. People as such define an era. The creations of Bhupenda must be preserved. Not just the government, everyone must come forward to preserve his legacy. We must follow the path showed by Bhupenda”.
The state government is constructing the Bhupen Hazarika Museum which is expected to be inaugurated during the death anniversary of the artist.
Kabya Bithikat’, an anthology containing altogether 68 poems written after the demise of the music maestro, was released on Saturday. As a mark of respect to the “Brahmaputra Balladeer”, Nandita Gogoi Rajmohan, an Assamese poet and storyteller from Moranhat, has compiled a book of poems penned by a bunch of poets to pay homage to Bhupen Hazarika.
