Assam: Chaos in Baksa as locals scamper to collect 'left overs' of betel nuts destroyed by officials

Kumarikata: Bedlam erupted in Kumarikata area in Assam's Baksa district on Saturday in the Indo-Bhutan border close to the Kalanadi. It wasn't a local fair. Locals here came together with sacks, bags, spade, etc. to collect supari (betel nuts).

On Friday, betel nuts carried in around 11 trucks were set on fire and a day later, locals rushed to the spot to collect whatever could be salvaged.

It may be mentioned here that the Customs department isn't yet able to furnish the details as to how much Supari has been destroyed. They had seized the Supari from different parts of the State.

It needs mention here that locals of the Kalanadi area were greeted to the unusual sight of trucks stacked with 'supari'. Local police and customs officials soon arrived at the spot and the supari was put in holes due in the Earth and set afire.

Customs officials told media that this supari had been seized from across Assam and there were directions to destroy it.
