Assam Citizens Stranded in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruppur Seek Govt Help to Return Home

Guwahati, May 3, 2020:

Assam residents have sought aid from the State Government to return to their villages from Tamil Nadu’s Tiruppur as the country is about to enter the third phase of lockdown.

16 people are currently stuck in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruppur district. They neither have received aid from the company they worked for contractually nor they have been granted with any Government aid to survive the lockdown.

These 16 people are from different places in Assam, who had travelled to the South Indian city for employment prospects. However, since the past two months, they have been staying indoors with no job or daily wage to look forward to. The food that they had survived all this while was from their little savings that they had made.

Of these 16 people, 7 are from Assam’s Dibrugarh district, 2 from Tinsukia, 2 from Golaghat, 3 from Guwahati and 1 each from Boko and Jorhat. One individual is a resident of Meghalaya.

“It has been two months now that we have stayed like this, with no job and no food. We are unable to pay the rent and I request Assam Government to help us return to our villages,” said one of them.

They shared their plight and urged the Government to support them at this crucial hour. “We are facing extreme hardhips. The only thing left for us is to look forward to return home. Help us,” said a lady.

Here’s a list of the 16 residents stuck in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruppur district – Akon Chetia (35), Bhanu Gogoi Chetia (29), Tultul Gogoi (28), Pobitora Gogoi (25), Maneswar Gogoi (30), Shikhamoni Borah (38) and Bitupon Gogoi (27) from Dibrugarh. Abdul Ali and Radika Ali from Tinsukia, Ajit Mudoi and Bimal Basumatary from Golaghat, Sukumar Rabha, Kasto Das and Bijen Rabha from Guwahati, Sanjay Boro from Goalpara, Horughan Kalita from Jorhat and Homudra Boro from Boko. Kartik Rabha is from Meghalaya as per the list received by Inside Northeast.

They have provided a contact number - +918524979250 for Assam authorities to come to their rescue. It needs mention here that students and contractual employees have been stuck at different places due to the lockdown. The ones living hand to mouth are the ones who have been at the receiving end of the lockdown.

Their income source and future is yet not certain. With Governments trying to introduce measures to aid the vulnerable sections of the society, they can only hope for better days ahead. For now, returning home is their only hope.
