GUWAHATI: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today partook in the ceremonial handing over of Rs. 4 lakh as a rehabilitation package to the surrendered cadres of the now-defunct National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB).

"Happy to hand over fixed deposit certificates of Rs 4 lakh each to 1,105 ex-cadres of different NDFB factions who abjured violence as part of our commitment to bring disgruntled youth into the mainstream. Cadres left out now to be included in 3rd phase of rehabilitation," Biswa Sarma later tweeted.

Earlier, then chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on January 19 handed over Rs 4 lakh each to 1,279 surrendered cadres of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland in the first phase.

At the ceremony, Sarma also paid tribute to 'Bodofa' Upendranath Brahma, saying that he played a key role in the Bodo struggle. At the same time, he also lavished praise on India's "two foremost people" -- prime minister Narendra Modi and home minister Amit Shah -- for their role in the ongoing peace process.

After the signing of the peace accord, a total of 1615 cadres of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) laid down their arms on January 30, 2020, which was also the 72nd death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

On September 29 this year, several militants of the United Liberation of Bodoland (ULB) laid down their arms.
