Assam CM inaugurates Disaster Management and Research Institute in IIT-Guwahati

GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today inaugurated a Centre for Disaster Management and Research (CDMR) at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-Guwahati).

This was in accordance with PM Narendra Modi’s suggestion to IIT Guwahati in a convocation address in 2020 to establish the centre to assist the North-Eastern states in dealing with natural calamities. The CDMR has been built to help the North-Eastern states in effectively managing various natural and industrial disasters.

The centre was inaugurated in the presence of Professor RK Bhandari, former Director, Central Building Research Institute (CBRI), professor T.G. Sitharam, Director, IIT-Guwahati, IITG Faculty, researchers, and many national and international experts from around the world.

The new facility was inaugurated during the 7th edition of the quadrennial ‘International Conference on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics' (ICRAGEE), which took place from July 12 to 15, 2021.

The conference focused on mapping geo-hazard risks, developing Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, and establishing cooperation between academics and practitioners working on geo-hazard issues.
