In the wake of the ‘hooch tragedy’ in Assam during which 185 people lost their lives and more than 60 children were orphaned, the Assam administration, under the leadership of Sarbananda Sonowal, has decided to ban country liquor (sulai) and ‘lali gur’ (molasses), which is used in its making. The CM has directed the DCs of all districts to ban the sale and consumption of the substance. It is to be mentioned that a ‘lali gur’ dealer, Mahesh Beria, has been arrested in Jonai.
The resolution to ban ‘lali gur’ was taken during a meeting held at Janata Bhawan in Guwahati on Monday to discuss the ‘hooch tragedy’. In the meeting, the CM also directed officials to provide shelter to children orphaned during the ‘Hooch tragedy’. Moreover, the Chief Minister has also directed officials to carry out awareness programs across the state to create awareness about the harmful effects of consuming the cheap country liquor 'sulai'.
