As the clock stuck 12 o' clock, and from 2019, the nation moved to 2020, embattled Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal uploaded a video on his official social media platforms, where he can be seen making an appeal for "peace" and "unity".
Extending his greetings to the people, Sonowal says, “You are well aware that now is the age of competition. In this competitive age, to be successful, we must work hard. To foster a work-culture, we have to maintain peace and order. I hope, the people will try to bring in peace in 2020.”
The Chief Minister also stated that there is peace in unity and togetherness, and urged the people to come together to tackle the challenges ahead as a collective.

Sonowal's appeal comes amid raging protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act across the length-and-breadth of the State. The CM himself has come under attack from the leaders of the anti-CAA brigade. Even Sonowal's former All Assam Students' Union (AASU) comrades have come out swinging against him for supporting the 'CAA'.
Recently, at an anti-CAA rally, the present General Secretary of the AASU, Lurinjyoti Gogoi, launching a scathing attack at Sonowal, had asked how Sonowal, who had once cherished the 'Assam Accord' as his 'Gita Koran Bible', allow the naturalization of refugees who had come post March 24, 1971, the cut off date set by the 'Accord'.
However, Sonowal, in his speeches during the BJP party's pro-CAA peace rallies, maintains that he has done nothing wrong. In a recent speech, in which he was seen getting swayed by emotions, Sonowal asked the poeple why they had boycotted him.
