GOLAGHAT: Assam's Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has given a new meaning to the phenomenon of "social distancing" by addressing an empty venue here today.

Assam CM Sonowal, who had gone to Golaghat on the occasion of 'Xilpi Diwas' to make an address, was scheduled to arrive 12:30 pm in the afternoon.

However, the Assam CM was extremely late, prompting the people who had come from afar to leave before a single word was spoken.

"I am leaving as I am certain that the meeting will go on till late; I have left my kids at home," said a woman who was seen leaving the venue before the CM had reached.

Another woman said that she had arrived at 9 am in the morning, but could not wait for the CM's speech as it was "too late." "Although Assam CM Sonowal has come now, everyone is leaving as they have been waiting for a long time," she said.

According to reports, people had started trickling in at around 9:30 AM in the morning to hear the CM's speech.

However, Sonowal did not arrive at the venue until 4 pm in the afternoon. By that time, most of the people who had gathered at the ground had headed homewards. Only the VIPs and a handful of people remained.

Somewhat bizarrely, even though the people who had gathered for the event packed their bags and left early, Sonowal and the rest of the dignitaries delivered their speeches at a largely empty venue -- to muted applause.
