Assam Comes Together to Celebrate Death Anniversary of Vaishnavite Saint Madhavdev

Guwahati, August 20, 2019:

The state of Assam celebrated the Tithi of Sri Sri Madhavdev on Tuesday.

On the occasion, the ‘naamghars’ across the state, especially in Majuli district, organized ‘Naam-Kirtan’ (prayers). The ‘baap’ (a priest who recites the prayers) along with the ‘ai’ (woman devotees) recited the ‘Naam-Kirtan’, composed by Sri Sri Madhavdev.

On this day, apart from ‘boot-maah proxad’ (prashad- containing gram and beans), the ladies prepared ‘kesa- laru’ (laddoos prepared with rice powder, coconut, and sugar) as one of the key items.

The people recall one of the greatest Vaishnava Saints in Assam by organizing a programme to discuss his contribution towards Assamese society and culture. People try to pass his teachings to the younger generations through these programmes.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal also wished the people of Assam and took to his to twitter to recall the “gurujona” on the day of this tithi. He tweeted, “আধ্যাত্মিকতা, ভাতৃত্ববোধ আৰু সমন্বয়ৰ ভাৱধাৰাৰে মহাপুৰুষজনাই বৃহত্তৰ অসমীয়া সমাজক শক্তিশালী কৰি গৈছে। তেখেতৰ আদৰ্শ আৰু কৰ্মৰাজি আমাৰ বাবে মাৰ্গদৰ্শকস্বৰূপ। গুৰুজনাৰ সৃষ্টিৰাজিৰ প্ৰসাৰৰদ্বাৰা এখন নতুন অসম গঢ়াৰ বাবে জাতি-জনগোষ্ঠীসমূহে ঐক্যবদ্ধভাৱে আগবাঢ়িব লাগিব। #MadhabdevTithi”

Translation: “Spirituality, brotherhood and co-ordination - ideology has greatly strengthened the great Assamese community. His ideology and work is our guideline. By spreading his vision, all the communities must unite to form a better Assam. # MadhabdevTithi”

Madhabdev was an important preceptor of the ‘Ekasara ma Dharma’ known for his loyalty to his guru, Sri Sri Srimanta Sankardev as well as his artistic brilliance.

Initially a Sakta worshipper, he was converted to Ekasara Dharma by Sri Sri Sankardev and became his most prominent disciple. He became the religious as well as the artistic successor of Sri Sri Sankardev after the latter’s death in 1568.

He is known particularly for his ‘book of hymns’, the ‘naam ghokha’, as well as a large selection of 'Borgeets'.
