Assam Congress alleges BJP candidate of indulging in bribery, corrupt practices to buy votes

GUWAHATI: Just a day before the By-polls in Assam, the state Congress has filed a complaint to Chief electoral Officer against BJP candidate Phani Talukdar for allegedly indulging in bribery and corrupt practices by distributing money to the voters.

"It has come to the notice of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee through media reports and video clippings that the BJP candidates of Bhawani Constituency Phani Talukdar is indulging in bribery and corrupt practices by distributing money to voters outside his residence in Bhawanipur. This brazen act by the candidate is gross violation of the provision of section 123 (1) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 as well s Election Commission of India's model code of conduct", the letter read.

It added that the news report and video clippings hasve become viral in social media platforms which display distribution of money to the voters of Bhabanipur LAC just a day before polling of the ensuing Assembly Bye-Elections in the state of Assam.

"It has been reported in the said news that the local residents of Bhabanipur has been bribed for Rs200 each in front of the house of Phani Talukdar and the same can also be clearly in the video footage of the said news report which is attached with this complaint letter", the letter read.

Elaborating further APCC urged to take prompt and immediate action against Phani Talukdar by disqualifying him from contrsting the ensuing Bye-elections to be held on 30th October 2021.

"This is how BJP is making mockery of Democracy. Vote buying is in the DNA of BJP", Assam Congress had tweeted earlier.

"In front of house of BJP candidate from Bhawanipur LAC Sri Phani Talukdar, one BJP worker is distributing money to purchase their votes in by-election", it added.

By- election to the Assam Legislative Assembly, 2021 will be held on October 30, 2021 in the five LACs –28 Gossaigaon, 41 Bhabanipur, 58 Tamulpur, 101 Mariani and 107 Thowra Legislative Assembly Constituencies.
