Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on Friday launched a mass signature campaign against the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

The “signature campaign” that has been launched by the Congress body will carry 20 lakh signatures as a memorandum to the President of India Ramnath Kovind to roll back the contentious Act.

The campaign began with the signature from former Chief Ministers Tarun Gogoi and Dr. Bhumidhar Barman, followed by the rest of the APCC members and other people present at the flagging off ceremony. The signature campaign has been launched under the supervision of former CM Dr. Bhumidhar Barman.
Following this, the Congress leaders embarked on the “Astitwa Rakhyar Janajagaran Pad Jatra”, a protest rally to aware the masses to protect the identity, that will conclude at Jalukbari today.
The rally began in Sadiya of Assam and witnessed mass participation of hundreds of people including Congress workers from across the state.

It is to be mentioned here that the state of Assam has been constantly protesting against the Bill-turned-Act since the passing of the Bill at the Rajya Rabha on December 11.
Meanwhile, former CM Tarun Gogoi is advocating against the Citizenship Amendment Act at the Supreme Court and the next date of hearing has been called on January 22 after the Court’s winter break.
