Guwahati: Debabrata Saikia, leader of Opposition in Assam today urged Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to take action against Cabinet Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on the basis of a case registered against the latter for having uttered the words ‘Jai Bangladesh’ on the floor of the Assam Legislative Assembly in December last year.
Saikia pointed out that Dr. Sarma had uttered the cry on the Assembly floor when Rupjyoti Kurmi, Congress MLA from Mariani LAC, was addressing the House and opposing the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (or CAB).
Subsequently, 6 students of the Cotton University had lodged an FIR at the Panbazar Police Station against Dr. Sarma for promoting enmity between different groups, but the case was transferred to the Dispur Police Station on jurisdictional grounds.
Saikia pointed out that Dr. Sarma is alleging that slogans of ‘Pakistan zindabad’ were raised in the presence of AIUDF chief, Mr. Badruddin Ajmal, but Dr. Sarma had himself uttered ‘Jai Bangladesh’ at no less a venue than the Assam Legislative Assembly. "These words have been recorded in the Proceedings of the House," Saikia said.

Responding to the alleged ‘Pakistan zindabad’ slogans, Mr. Saikia mentioned that officials of Facebook have already placed Dr. Sarma’s post in the ‘false information’ category.
The Leader of the Opposition said that no action has been taken against Sarma for 11 months even though he sang paeans to another country after having taken oath on the Constitution of India.
"In case the Chief Minister believes in democracy and the Constitution of India, then he should have the courage to take action against Dr. Sarma and thereby discharge his responsibility to maintain peace and harmony in all parts of Assam," Saikia stated.
