Assam: Cop suspended for assaulting COVID-19 medical staff

A cop has been placed under suspension for assaulting a doctor at Amteka in Chirang district in Assam. The incident took place in front of Amteka MPCH. 

As per allegations, the Officer-in-charge of Amguri Police Station Surachandra Doley and a few constables physically assaulted the doctor and a few medical staff, who were discharging their COVID-19 duty. The health workers including a doctor sustained injuries in the assault.

Doley has been placed under suspension for gross misconduct and dereliction of duty, Chirang Superintendent of Police said.

Medical staffs were identified as Dr. Madhurjya Kakoti, accountant Nitu Das and pharmacist Raju Boro who are from Kajalgaon.

“All the health workers were hindered from going to the hospital in Kajolgaon. They were held along with the ambulance on their way to the hospital at Amguri Police Station,” said a medical srtaff.

“During his period of suspension, his headquarter will be at Police Reserve, Chirang. He shall draw sustenance allowance admissible as per government norms", the official order of SP office Chirang added.

It is pertinent to mention that the state government has repeatedly appealed to the people of the state to cooperate with the doctors, health workers, and police in the fight against the novel coronavirus. “But, the cruel act of the police will incite people to go against the frontline workers in the fight against the COVID-19,” a local said.

It may be mentioned that the lethal coronavirus has infected a total of 595 people and claimed four lives. Of the 595 confirmed cases, 526 are active and 62 have been cured and discharged so far while three patients were migrated.

The state had reported its first case on March 31st, 2020 while it crossed 100 cases on May 17th, 2020. Thereafter, within eight days the state tally has cross 500-mark. With the return of stranded migrants to the state, the Assam has witnessed a sudden surge in the positive COVID-19 cases.
