The Assam government has said it has received various corruption-related complaints against eight current and former MLAs and MP, including three ex-ministers, of Congress party over a period of time. In a written reply to a query by the Leader of the Opposition and Congress MLA Debarata Saikia, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary said two complaints have been received against former Congress minister and MLA Rockybul Hussain and enquiry is in progress in both the cases. While the first complaint was registered in May 2017 pertaining to an alleged misappropriation of government money by misusing official power and position in the P&RD department, the second complaint of alleged disproportionate assets was registered against Hussain last month.

Replying on behalf of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who also holds the Home portfolio, Patowary said another ex-Congress minister, Atawa Munda, has been named in a complaint pertaining to misappropriation of P&RD department money along with Hussain. Two separate complaints have also been registered against former Congress minister Akon Bora in May 2017 alleging misappropriation of government money as the then Social Welfare Department Minister.

A complaint of disproportionate assets has been registered in April 2010 against current Congress MLA Sherman Ali as the then Forest Ranger of the Maibong Afforestation Range in Haflong, Patowary said. Besides, two former MLAs Ataur Rahman Mazharbhuya and Abdul Mohib Mazumdar also have complaints of misappropriation of MLA fund and misappropriation of government fund respectively, against them, he added.

The government has also received complaints against former Lok Sabha MP Ranee Narah and former MLA Siddique Ahmed, both Congress politicians from the state. Besides the elected representatives, several senior state government officers have cases of corruption under investigation against them, while many have been chargesheeted also, Patowary said. The CID, Assam, has registered 19 cases since 2008 against various officials and chargesheets in seven cases have been submitted, he added.
