Dispur Police have arrested the assistant General Secretary and former General Secretary of Cotton University for protesting against the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.
The police have arrested former GS Pranjal Kalita and present Assistant General Secretary along with other students from Dispur during the ongoing protest.

The students of all the colleges and universities in the city are taking part in the mass movement, which has been termed as “Dispur Gherao”, against the Bill.
It is to be mentioned here that the situation in Guwahati has turned violent in the state, and in several instances, the police personnel have beaten the protesters and fired tear gas shells. The personnel has also resorted to blank firing to subdue the protesters, it was reported.
This comes at a time when Union Home Minister Amit Shah is discussing the Bill at the Rajya Sabha.

Apart from the AGS of Cotton University, many other students have been detained across the state for protesting against the contentious bill.
Many of the students have also been injured by the lathi charge, reports said.
On the other hand, shops across Guwahati have been shut down due to rising incidents of mob violence amid the ruckus over the Bill.
