Guwahati, January 6, 2019:

Cricket lovers of Assam on January 5 launched into slogans decrying the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act at during the washed-up T-20 cricket tie between India and Sri Lanka that was scheduled to be held in Guwahati city's Barsapara stadium.

The intermittent spells of rain, which ultimately led to the tie being washed out, could not play deterrent to the zeal of the protesters who launched into slogans such as "Sarbananda go back", "Himanta Biswa go back", and "BJP sarkar (Government) go back." As soon as the Assam leaders were shown on the big screen installed at the stadium, shouts decrying the current administration could be heard from many corners.

Video of this very unique protest was recorded, and is now being distributed via the medium of social media.

It may be mentioned here that Assam continues to rise in protest against the controversial amendment of the Citizenship Act, that was forced through both Houses of Parliament by BJP majorities.

As soon as the Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha on January 10, the death anniversary of the first martyr of the Assam Agitation (1979-1985).

Meanwhile, damp patches on the pitch due to rain forced the abandonment of the first Twenty20 international between India and Sri Lanka without a ball being bowled in Guwahati on Sunday despite groundsmen even turning to a hair dryer and steam iron in a desperate attempt to save the game.
