Delimitation of constituencies in Assam, which was stalled more than a decade ago following objections by the state government and civil society groups, could be completed ahead of the assembly polls next year.
In 2008, the election commission had notified that the exercise would remain postponed till “such time as the National Register of Citizens (NRC) is updated to reflect the true population configuration in the state.”

Now, a notification issued by the Government of India and undersigned by Shangara Ram, Secretary, informs that Assam will have 14 Seats. Besides, 126 Seats will be assigned to the Legislative Assembly of the State.
The 14 Lok Sabha seats will be: Karimganj, Silchar (SC), Diphu (ST), Nagaon, Tezpur, Guwahati, Barpeta, Dhubri, Kokrajhar, Udalguri, Kaliabor, Lakhimpur (ST), Dibrugarh, and Jorhat.
9 Seats will be reserved for the Scheduled Castes, while 19 seats will be reserved for the STs.
It may be mentioned here that Assam has been redelimited into territorial parliamentary and assembly constituencies on the basis of 2001 census and the extent of such constituencies as delimited now shall remain frozen till the first census to be taken after the year 2026.
