‘Declared Foreigner’ Phalu Das’ body was finally accepted by his family after 5 days of his death in Assam’s GMCH. Das was admitted to Goalpara Hospital on October 11.
Das had passed away after a prolonged illness in Goalpara’s detention camp. His family had denied accepting the 70-year-old’s body as he was declared foreigner by the Foreigners’ Tribunal in Goalpara. The family put forward the demand to declare his as Indian citizen or else they won’t accept his body. Barkhetri MLA Narayan Deka had assisted the family in bringing Das home.

Phalu Das, a resident of Satemari of Nalbari’s Mukalmuwa was lodged in Goalpara’s detention camp from 2017 after he was declared ‘foreigner’ by the Foreigners’ Tribunal.
It may be mentioned here that another declared ‘Bangladeshi national’, Dulal Pal died in the detention camp in Sonitpur on October 13. He was suffering from multiple ailments and was admitted to the hospital on September 28. Paul’s family too refused to accept his dead body, as the authorities do not consider him to be 'Indian', despite having all the necessary documents.

Rather, they have asked for his body to be sent to Bangladesh. Later, the body was accepted by the family after the passage of 10 days.
