Assam: Dibrugarh's Namphake Village Closes Down Picnic Spot to Protest 'CAA'

Dibrugarh, December 28, 2019:

Tourists will no longer be able to visit the famous Namphake village in Upper Assam’s Dibrugarh district, as it has been shut down for an indefinite period as a mark of protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act.

The residents of Namphake, mainly belonging to the Tai-Phake community, have closed the village for tourists after the greatly reviled Bill-turned-Act was enacted in the Rajya Sabha.

The iconic village, which is located along the banks of Burhidihing river, is a popular tourist spot. Every year, tourists and picnickers throng to Namphake to witness the serenity and bask in nature’s lap, but this year, the Namphake village will not be a picnic spot for the tourists.

“Every year a lot of tourists come to visit this place, especially in the later part of December and the first half of January. However, due to the widespread protests of the people of Assam against the CAA, we have closed down Namphake for tourists. This is a silent way to show our resistance against the CAA and this will continue for an indefinite period...” said one of the locals.

"We protest the CAA and that is why we have closed this village. We will not start the new year amid this sad phase that Assam finds herself in. We request all the people not to visit Namphake for picnics. We have completely shut our village for picnics. They can come and visit the Monastery, though,” informed a monk.
