GUWAHATI: Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu on Friday criticized the colleges of Assam for asking students to identify with their caste in online admission form in Three Year Degree Course, 2021-2022.
Ranoj Pegu said. “Other than Scheduled Tribe, Scheduled Caste and Other Backward Classes, no information on caste is needed while enrolling into colleges.”

Notably, 11 colleges in Assam added a category of ‘Community’ in their online admission form where students were asked to tick mark against castes – Brahman, Ganak. Kalita. Muslim, Sudra, Baishya and Others.
“Taking advantage of certain autonomy, the colleges have done is act. I strongly condemn it. There is no direction from the government to identify students on the basis of caste in school admission.
After facing backlash from students organsations, student communities and others, the colleges have removed the admission forms from their respective websites.
