The elderly citizens of Assam sent out a clear message: that Assam would not accept a single illegal foreigner post-1971, be it Hindu or Muslim. At the same time, the protesting members sent out warnings to Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and the Central Government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
One of the elderly protesters told us, "This is a dark legislation. If it comes into being, our Assamese language and culture will be in peril. It has religious undertones. And as such, we appeal the BJP Governments, at both the State and Centre, to scrap this Act."
Meanwhile, the AASU General Secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi, terming the CAA as a 'communally motivated' Bill, said that the AASU will not talk any further with the Government, and demanded that the provisions of the Assam Accord be implemented "in toto".
Commending the protesters from across the State for pouring out onto the streets to condemn the CAA, Gogoi also pointed out that the act of protesting "is based on Constitutional ethics."
